Through the Factory Gates

Chihiro's dad parked their car outside the rusty gates of PlayTime Co. Toy Factory. The old building loomed ahead like a sleeping giant, its broken windows staring down at them.

"Are you sure we should go in there?" Mom asked, brushing dust from her coat.

Dad checked his camera. "The real estate agent said it's perfectly safe. Just needs some photos for the listing."

Chihiro pressed her nose against the car window. The factory looked scary, but something about it made her curious. Faded circus posters still hung on the walls, and colorful paint peeled like old confetti.

"Can I come with you?" she asked.

Dad smiled. "Of course. Stay close though."

They walked through the creaking gates together.

The Glass Display

The factory's lobby stretched out like a forgotten playroom. Dust particles danced in shafts of sunlight streaming through cracked skylights. Old toy displays lined the walls, their colors faded but still cheerful.

"Look at all these toys," Chihiro whispered, stepping closer to a glass case.

Inside sat a beautiful doll with bright red pigtails tied with cyan bows. Her vintage dress was a lovely mix of cyan and blue, and her cyan eyes seemed to sparkle even in the dim light. A pull string hung from her back.

"That's Poppy," Dad read from a dusty nameplate. "She looks almost real."

Chihiro pressed her face against the glass. Something about Poppy made her heart skip.
