The Forest's Hidden Secret
Listen to audiobook
The Quiet Morning
Bubby stepped through the tall oak trees, his red sneakers crunching on fallen leaves. The forest felt different today—quieter than usual. Birds weren't singing their morning songs.
He pulled out his phone to check the time. Nine-thirty. Mom said he could explore until lunch, but something made him want to turn around and head home.
A soft whimpering sound drifted through the trees.
Bubby stopped walking. The sound came again—like a puppy crying, but sadder. Much sadder.
His brown eyes scanned the forest floor. Between two mossy rocks, something glinted in the sunlight. A small wooden box sat nestled in the dirt, its surface carved with tiny flowers.
The crying sound was coming from inside the box.
The Voice in the Box
Bubby knelt down beside the wooden box, his heart beating fast. The whimpering sounds grew louder when he got closer.
"Hello?" he whispered. "Is someone in there?"
A tiny voice squeaked back. "Help me! I'm trapped!"
Bubby's brown eyes widened. He carefully lifted the carved lid. Inside sat the smallest sparrow he'd ever seen, no bigger than his thumb. Her feathers were dusty brown with tiny white spots.
"My name is Pip," she chirped sadly. "A mean fox chased me into this box yesterday. Now I'm too scared to fly."
Bubby gently reached out his hand. "I'm Bubby. Don't worry, Pip. I'll help you get brave again."
But as he spoke, heavy footsteps crashed through the bushes behind them.
