An Ordinary Evening

Scarlet fluttered her purple butterfly wings as she swept the marble floors of Fairy Realm Castle. Her black wand with its ruby tip gleamed in the evening light streaming through tall windows.

"Another quiet day," she murmured, pushing red hair from her amber eyes.

Queen Lysira trotted into the grand hall, her white robe flowing behind her unicorn form. Silver fairy wings sparkled on her back.

"Scarlet, dear, have you noticed anything strange lately?" the Queen asked, her horn catching the light.

"Strange how?" Scarlet paused her sweeping.

"Cold spots in the corridors. Doors creaking when no one's near. And yesterday, I could have sworn I heard giggling from the empty tower room."

Scarlet's fur prickled. The castle had always been peaceful. She glanced toward the winding staircase leading to the tower.

"Should I investigate?" she offered, though her voice wavered slightly.

Queen Lysira's eyes grew thoughtful. "Perhaps tomorrow. But be careful, little fox fairy."

The Echoing Challenge

The next morning, Scarlet climbed the winding tower stairs. Each step made her amber eyes dart around the narrow stone walls. Her black wand trembled in her grip.

"Hello?" she called softly. "Anyone there?"

A giggle echoed from above, followed by a creaky voice. "Finally! Someone came to play!"

Scarlet's purple wings fluttered nervously as she reached the tower room. Empty chairs sat around a dusty table, but she saw no one.

"I'm Mrs. Whiskers!" the invisible voice announced cheerfully. "I've been so lonely up here. The other spirits left ages ago, but I stayed hoping for visitors."

"Spirits?" Scarlet's fur stood on end.

"Oh yes, dear! We're having contests tomorrow night. Silly games, really. If you lose three challenges, you must stay here forever and keep us company."

Scarlet's wand slipped from her shocked grip, clattering to the floor. "Forever?"

"Don't worry! The games are fun. Backwards singing, upside-down dancing, riddle contests. Simple things!"

Scarlet picked up her wand with shaking paws. This wasn't just strange castle noises anymore. This was serious.
