The Glitch That Changed Everything
Listen to audiobook
Static Evening
The living room buzzed with the soft hum of evening television. Vox sat rigid in his favorite armchair, his retro TV head flickering with static lines as he watched the news. The anchor's voice droned about declining ratings for his media empire.
"Those idiots don't know quality content when they see it," Vox muttered, his screen crackling with irritation.
Valentino lounged on the velvet couch nearby, scrolling through his phone with painted nails. His magenta heart-patterned suit was perfectly pressed despite the casual hour. "Darling, you're getting worked up over nothing again."
"Nothing?" Vox's screen flashed brighter. "My network is hemorrhaging viewers!"
Velvette bounded down the stairs, her red and black outfit a blur of motion. Her curly black hair bounced with pink streaks catching the light. "What's all the shouting about?"
"Vox is having another meltdown," Valentino said without looking up.
"I am not having a—" Vox's screen suddenly flickered violently, pixels dancing erratically across his face. A high-pitched whine escaped his speakers.
The Breaking Point
The whine from Vox's speakers grew louder, piercing through the living room like a fire alarm. His screen flickered between news channels and static snow, completely out of his control.
"Turn it off!" Velvette shouted, covering her ears.
Valentino jumped up from the couch, his phone clattering to the floor. "Vox, what's happening?"
"I can't—" Vox's voice crackled and distorted. "Something's wrong with my circuits!"
His TV head sparked dangerously, sending tiny bolts of electricity dancing across the glass. The screen displayed fragments of angry text: "DESTROY... RATINGS... I'LL SHOW THEM!"
Velvette grabbed Valentino's arm. "We need to get him to stop before he fries himself!"
But Vox was beyond hearing them. His screen blazed with fury as he stood up, knocking over his armchair. "I'll destroy you all!" he roared, his voice a garbled mess of static and rage.
The lights in the house flickered. Picture frames rattled on the walls.
"His anger is making it worse," Valentino whispered, backing toward the stairs.
Suddenly, Vox's screen went completely black. He swayed dangerously, then collapsed.
