The Glowing Sister's Secret
Listen to audiobook
The Heart That Waits
Mariza pressed her face against the kitchen window, watching the empty harbor. Her turquoise necklace caught the morning light as she traced half a heart with her finger on the glass.
"She'll come back," Mariza whispered to herself. Three years had passed since her sister Coral sailed away on another adventure. Three years of waiting.
Her phone buzzed on the counter. Unknown number.
"Hello?" Mariza answered.
"Little fish?" The voice was familiar but different somehow, softer and strange.
"Coral!" Mariza's heart jumped. "Where are you? When are you coming home?"
"I'm at the dock now. But Mariza..." Coral's voice wavered. "I need to tell you something. I've changed."
"Changed how?" Mariza grabbed her jacket and headed for the door.
"You'll see. Meet me at pier seven."
The line went dead. Mariza ran through the village streets, her sneakers pounding against the pavement. After three long years, her pirate sister was finally home.
The Return at Pier Seven
Mariza reached pier seven breathless, her heart pounding. The wooden dock stretched into the harbor where a small sailboat bobbed in the waves.
"Coral?" she called out.
A figure stepped from behind the boat's mast. Mariza's sister looked older, thinner, with shorter hair that seemed to shimmer turquoise in the sunlight. Her eyes held a sadness Mariza had never seen before.
"Little fish." Coral's voice cracked as she opened her arms.
Mariza ran forward and hugged her sister tight. But something felt different. Coral's skin was cooler than before, and her hair smelled like ocean salt instead of the vanilla perfume she used to wear.
"I missed you so much," Mariza whispered.
"I know. I'm sorry I stayed away so long." Coral pulled back, studying Mariza's face. "You've grown up."
A seagull landed on the boat's railing and squawked loudly. Coral flinched at the sound, her hand shooting to her throat.
"Are you okay?" Mariza asked.
"I need to show you something." Coral's voice trembled. "But not here. We need to get somewhere safe first."
