The Golden Hard Hat

The Orange Vest
Danny wiped sweat from his forehead as the morning sun blazed over Construction Island. Cranes towered like metal giants around him, their arms swinging heavy beams through the air. The sound of hammering and drilling filled his ears.
"Hey, look who's here!" Marcus called out, his voice cutting through the noise. The older boy strutted over with his crew, their clean hard hats gleaming. "It's Danny the Dreamer!"
Danny's stomach tightened. He gripped his toolbox harder and kept walking toward the building site where he was assigned to work today.
"What's that junk in your bag?" Marcus pointed at Danny's worn toolbox. "More of your weird inventions nobody wants?"
The other boys laughed. Danny's face burned, but he didn't stop walking. Inside his toolbox, wrapped carefully in old cloth, sat his latest creation. He'd been working on it for weeks in secret, using scraps he found after everyone else went home.
Marcus stepped in front of him, blocking his path to the construction site.
The Smart Woman's Warning
"Move aside, kid," Marcus said, shoving Danny's shoulder. "Real builders are working here."
Danny stumbled but kept his grip on his toolbox. He looked around the construction site and saw a woman with short brown hair watching from near the crane controls. She wore a hard hat and safety glasses, and her eyes looked sharp and intelligent.
"Actually," the woman called out, stepping closer, "I need someone small to check the foundation supports under Building Seven. The gaps are too narrow for adults."
Marcus laughed. "You want Danny? He'll probably break something!"
The woman ignored Marcus completely. "What's your name, son?"
"Danny," he said quietly.
"I'm Sarah, the site engineer. Can you handle this job? It's important."
Danny nodded, his heart beating faster. Nobody had ever asked him to do something important before.
"Wait," Sarah said, noticing his toolbox. "What's that you're carrying? Looks heavy."
Danny's face went red. "Just... some things I made."
Sarah's eyebrows raised with interest. "You make things? What kind of things?"
Before Danny could answer, a loud crack echoed across the construction site. Everyone froze.
