The Edge of Tomorrow

Anisa stood at the edge of the flowery meadow, her purple dress rippling in the warm breeze. The Golden Kingdom stretched endlessly before her, painted in shades of amber and gold. Butterflies danced between the tall grass, and the scent of honeysuckle filled the air.

"One more year," she whispered to herself, picking a yellow daisy. "Just one year in that strange modern place."

Her sparkly green eyes grew misty as she thought about leaving tomorrow. The Golden Kingdom was all she'd ever known. Here, the sun always felt gentle on her skin, and every flower seemed to smile back at her.

A rustling sound made her turn. Behind a cluster of sunflowers, something glinted in the afternoon light. Anisa's curiosity sparked despite her sadness. She stepped closer, her curly black hair catching the golden rays.

"What could be hiding in there?" she wondered aloud, pushing aside the tall stems. Whatever it was, it seemed to be calling to her.

The glinting object turned out to be a small silver box, no bigger than her palm. Anisa picked it up carefully, brushing away the dirt and flower petals.

"Oh my!" squeaked a tiny voice. "You found me at last!"

Anisa nearly dropped the box. A pair of bright blue eyes had appeared on its surface, blinking up at her.

"You can talk?" she gasped.

"Of course I can talk! I'm the Golden Kingdom's Memory Keeper. I've been waiting here for ages!" The box's voice sounded urgent. "Listen carefully, dear girl. Tomorrow you leave for that dreadful modern place, don't you?"

Anisa nodded, her heart sinking again.

"Well, here's the terrible news," the box continued. "Once you cross into their world, you'll start forgetting this place. Every day, a little more will fade. Your memories of home, your family, even your own magic—all of it will disappear!"

"No!" Anisa cried. "That can't be true!"

"I'm afraid it is. But I can help you remember, if you'll take me with you." The box's eyes looked hopeful. "Will you?"
