The Great Hair Escape
Listen to audiobook
Wild Manes and Worried Minds
Jackie tugged her long black hair forward, letting it cascade over her shoulders like a dark waterfall. The red and black striped sleeves of her tomboy outfit caught the morning light streaming through her bedroom window in Harriettsville.
"Oi, you ready for another epic day of avoiding those hair-cutting devils?" she muttered to herself in her Australian accent, peering through her thick bangs at the mirror.
Down the street, her best mates Ollie, Remi, Mike, Jacob, and Carson were probably doing the same thing—making sure their wild, untamed hair looked as messy as possible. In Harriettsville, that was their badge of honor.
Jackie's phone buzzed. A text from Ollie: "Emergency meeting at the park! The hairdressers are planning something big!"
Her stomach dropped. Those sweet but sassy girls with their shiny scissors and terrifying clippers were always scheming new ways to "help" kids look their best.
Jackie grabbed her backpack and headed for the door. Whatever those stylists were plotting, she and her friends would face it together.
The Festival Trap
Jackie sprinted down the cobblestone path to Harriettsville Park, her long black hair streaming behind her like a battle flag. Her red and black boots splashed through puddles left from last night's rain.
At the park's center, she spotted her mates huddled under the big oak tree. Ollie was pacing frantically, his wild brown curls bouncing with each step. Remi sat cross-legged, twisting his shoulder-length blonde hair around his finger nervously. Mike and Jacob stood back-to-back, their arms crossed defensively, while Carson kept checking his phone.
"Right, what's the emergency?" Jackie called out, slightly out of breath.
Ollie spun around, his green eyes wide with panic. "The hairdressers! They've set up a booth at the music festival this weekend!"
"What music festival?" Jackie asked.
"The one starting tomorrow!" Carson waved his phone. "Look at this flyer - 'Free Hair Makeovers for Kids' with a picture of scissors and..." he gulped, "clippers."
Jackie felt her stomach lurch. The annual Harriettsville Music Festival was the biggest event of the year. Everyone would be there.
"We're trapped," whispered Remi. "There's no escape this time."
