The Great Movie Theater Mystery
Listen to audiobook
The Grand Opening
Princess Mononoke pushed through the excited crowd at Ghibli Park's new cinema. Her friends followed close behind - Chihiro clutching her backpack, Jiji perched on Kiki's shoulder, and little Mei bouncing with excitement.
"Look at that huge screen!" Sosuke pointed up at the silver surface that stretched across the theater's front wall.
The projectionist, a cheerful woman with wire-rimmed glasses, waved at the children. "Welcome to Cinema Orion! You're our very first visitors!"
Totoro squeezed into an oversized seat while Ponyo splashed in a small bowl Satsuki had brought for her. The lights dimmed and the projector hummed to life. But instead of a movie title appearing on screen, everyone gasped.
The screen showed a real forest - trees swaying in actual wind.
The Screen That Wouldn't Listen
"That's not a movie!" Mei squeaked, pointing at the swaying trees on the screen.
The projectionist rushed to her machine. She pressed buttons and turned dials, but the forest kept moving on the giant screen. "This is impossible," she muttered.
Chihiro stood up in her seat. "Look, there's a fox walking between those trees!"
A red fox with a bushy tail padded across the screen. It stopped and looked directly at the children, tilting its head.
"Did it just see us?" Satsuki whispered.
Ponyo splashed excitedly in her bowl. "Pretty fox! I want to swim with it!"
The projectionist wiped her glasses nervously. "The equipment was working perfectly yesterday. I tested it myself with a nature documentary."
Princess Mononoke stepped closer to the screen. The fox on the other side stepped closer too, matching her movements exactly.
