The Great Village Puddle Disaster
Listen to audiobook
Morning Mischief
Chillishake bounced out of his hut, his red hoodie gleaming in the morning sun. The chili-and-milkshake logo on his chest caught the light as he stretched his arms wide.
"Perfect day to help everyone!" he announced to nobody in particular.
His messy black curls stuck up in all directions, and his big green eyes sparkled with mischief. The village of Garbharjhala was already bustling with activity. Mrs. Meera was hanging wet saris on her clothesline, while old Ramu fed his water buffalo near the well.
Chillishake skipped toward the main path, his worn sneakers slapping against the dirt. His striped socks had slipped down inside his blue shorts, but he didn't notice. He was too busy planning all the wonderful things he could do to help his neighbors.
A small puddle from yesterday's rain sat innocently beside the path, its muddy surface reflecting the cloudy sky. Chillishake didn't see it as he waved enthusiastically at Mrs. Meera.
The Stick Solution
SPLASH!
Chillishake's sneakers disappeared into the muddy puddle as he waved at Mrs. Meera. The cold water seeped through his striped socks, making him gasp.
"Oh no!" he yelped, windmilling his arms to keep balance.
Mrs. Meera looked over from her clothesline. "Chillishake! Are you alright?"
"I'm perfectly fine!" he called back, though mud was already creeping up his blue shorts. "Just testing the puddle's... depth!"
He tried stepping backward but his other foot slipped. Now both sneakers were stuck deep in the gooey bottom. When he pulled his right foot, his shoe stayed behind with a loud SLURP.
A small sparrow landed on a nearby fence post and chirped, as if laughing at him.
"I have an idea!" Chillishake announced proudly. He grabbed two long sticks from the ground and tried using them like stilts to lift himself out. Instead, the sticks sank deeper than his feet.
"Maybe I'll just... live here now," he muttered, wobbling on the wobbly sticks while the sparrow continued its amused chirping.
