The Kelp Forest Rescue
Listen to audiobook
Deep Water Wandering
Sunny giggled as she paddled her tiny arms through the crystal-clear water. The kelp forest stretched above her like giant green ribbons swaying in a slow dance. Fish with rainbow scales darted between the towering plants, and purple sea urchins dotted the sandy bottom like spiky cushions.
"Look at all the pretty fishies!" she squealed, her voice making bubbles that floated up toward the distant surface.
A curious orange seahorse wrapped its tail around a kelp stem and tilted its head at her. Sunny reached out with her chubby fingers to pet it, but the seahorse darted away with a flick of its fins.
She kicked her white sneakers, propelling herself deeper into the underwater forest. The water felt warm against her sunny yellow romper, and everything glowed with a magical green light.
A school of silver fish surrounded her, and Sunny clapped her hands in delight. She had never seen such a beautiful place. The kelp leaves tickled her pigtails as she swam between them, completely unaware of the dark shadow following her from behind.
Unexpected Visitors
The dark shadow crept closer behind Sunny as she giggled at the dancing kelp. Suddenly, rough hands grabbed her tiny arms from behind.
"Got her!" shouted a gruff voice.
Sunny spun around to see a bearded man in a torn red bandana and patched coat. His weathered face showed missing teeth when he grinned. "Captain Reef will pay good money for this little fish."
"Let me go!" Sunny squealed, kicking her white sneakers. But the pirate held tight.
From above, a sleek brown otter dove down through the water, chattering angrily at the pirate. "Chirp chirp chirp!" The otter's whiskers twitched as it circled them.
"Shoo, you mangy sea rat!" The pirate swatted at the otter with his free hand.
The otter darted away, but Sunny noticed something strange. When the pirate wasn't looking, the otter pulled a small wooden box from behind a kelp stem and tucked it under its arm.
"Time to meet the crew, little one," the pirate laughed, swimming upward with Sunny trapped in his grip. The kelp forest grew darker as they rose toward a massive ship's shadow blocking the sunlight above.
