Arrival at the Square

Anisa stepped off the dusty carriage and into Modern Kingdom's main square, her purple dress swishing around her legs. The cobblestones beneath her feet seemed to shimmer with an odd, pulsing light that made her green eyes squint.

"Welcome to our magnificent city!" called a merchant from his stall, his voice strangely flat despite the cheerful words. His eyes stared straight ahead, unblinking, as colorful lanterns swayed above his head.

Anisa tilted her head, studying the man's vacant expression. "Thank you! What beautiful lights you have here."

The merchant nodded mechanically. "Yes. Beautiful lights. We love our lights."

Around the square, other citizens moved with the same peculiar stillness. They spoke in monotone voices, their gazes fixed on the glowing orbs that hung from every building, every lamppost, every tree branch.

"How interesting," Anisa murmured, her quick wit already sensing something wasn't quite right. She noticed how everyone's movements seemed synchronized, as if they were all following the same invisible rhythm.

A young boy walked past, his steps perfectly matching the slow pulse of the nearest lantern.

The Monkey's Message

Anisa wandered deeper into the square, her curiosity growing stronger with each step. The synchronized movements of the citizens felt like watching a strange dance performed by sleepwalkers.

"Excuse me," she said to a woman carrying a basket of bread. "Could you tell me about your beautiful city?"

The woman stopped mid-stride and turned her head mechanically. "Beautiful city. Yes. Grand Wizard Leanard makes everything beautiful with his lights."

"Grand Wizard Leanard?" Anisa's eyebrows shot up.

"Our wonderful leader. He protects us with the glowing lights. We are safe. We are happy." The woman's voice remained eerily flat.

Just then, a small monkey scampered across the cobblestones, chattering loudly. Unlike the citizens, it moved with natural energy and grace. Several people turned their heads in perfect unison to watch it pass, but their expressions remained blank.

The monkey paused near Anisa's feet and looked up at her with bright, alert eyes. It tugged on her purple dress hem, then darted toward a narrow alley between two buildings.

"Wait!" Anisa called, following the creature. Something about its lively behavior felt refreshingly normal in this strange place.
