The Marker Mystery
Listen to audiobook
Morning at the Tower
Super Marker Buck adjusted his light blue goggles and stepped onto the observation deck of Super Marker Tower. The morning sun painted Line Forest City in golden hues below him. Humanoid deer walked alongside humans through the busy streets, their antlers catching the light.
"Another peaceful day," Buck said, stretching his arms. His red cape fluttered in the gentle breeze.
He summoned his giant marker with a thought. The massive drawing tool materialized in his hand, glowing with soft blue energy. Buck had used it countless times to help the city—drawing bridges over flooded streets, creating barriers to stop runaway vehicles, sketching solutions to problems both big and small.
The marker felt different today. Heavier somehow. As Buck gripped the handle, strange symbols flickered across its surface for just a moment before disappearing.
"Probably just need more sleep," he muttered, dismissing the odd sensation.
Buck began his morning patrol, unaware that his trusted marker was developing a mind of its own.
The Unexpected Guide
Buck soared between the glass towers of downtown Line Forest City, his red cape snapping behind him. The giant marker felt even stranger today—its weight shifting in his grip like it had a pulse.
"Morning patrol, same as always," he said to himself, but his voice sounded uncertain.
Below him, a hummingbird zipped past a street vendor's cart. The tiny bird suddenly stopped mid-flight and hovered directly in Buck's path. Its emerald feathers sparkled in the sunlight.
"Well, hello there," Buck said, slowing his flight. "You seem excited about something."
The hummingbird chirped urgently and darted toward the old laundromat on Maple Street. Buck had never seen a bird act so determined. He followed, landing softly on the sidewalk outside the weathered building.
The moment his feet touched the ground, his marker began to glow intensely. Without warning, it jerked forward in his hands and drew a perfect circle on the laundromat's brick wall.
The circle shimmered and opened into a swirling portal.
"What in the—" Buck started, but the marker pulled him toward the opening. Through the portal, he could see a snowy hillside that definitely wasn't part of Line Forest City.
The hummingbird chirped once more and dove straight through.
