The Marker That Wouldn’t Stop
Listen to audiobook
Blue Ink, Quiet Morning
Creative Marker Castle had four marker towers, each topped with a spinning cap that blinked like a lighthouse. Inside the middle tower, Creative Marker Caribou stood at her worktable and tugged her white hood into place.
Her phone buzzed: CITY COUNCIL: “New street lines by noon?”
“Easy,” she said, tapping reply with a hoof. “I have a better marker.”
A small drone hovered by the lamp. “Clip here,” it chirped. “Reminder: test on scrap first.”
“I always—” She stopped, because she did not always.
She summoned her giant glowing blue marker. The barrel hummed in her hands. She clicked a switch labeled CONTINUOUS.
The tip warmed.
A thin, bright blue line appeared on the floor. She lifted the marker.
The line kept going.
Clip’s camera-eye widened. “Uh. The balcony doors are open.”
The marker slipped from her grip and skated toward the sunlight, drawing as it went.
Blue Between the Bricks
Creative Marker Caribou lunged, but the giant marker slid faster, squealing on the balcony tiles like it had little wheels.
Clip, the small floating helper drone with a glossy white shell and one black camera-eye, zipped after it.
“Close the doors!” Clip chirped.
“They open outward!” she huffed, sprinting onto the skywalk that wrapped around the tower.
Below, Tundra Metropolis flashed with hover-bikes, buses on quiet treads, and glowing signs. The marker bumped the railing, tipped, and dropped—still drawing.
A bright blue line fell like a ribbon, landed on the street, and instantly hardened into a slick ridge.
A bus skidded to a stop. A human driver with a bright orange jacket leaned out the window.
“Hey! Your line’s blocking my route!” he shouted.
Creative Marker Caribou hooked the marker with both hands. It jerked, yanked her cape tight, and blasted forward.
Clip clanged into her shoulder. “It’s accelerating! Continuous means continuous!”
The marker shot into a cluster of sidewalk mail boxes, pinging metal. Parcels spilled, and the blue ridge split into fresh lines that crawled toward the transit hub
