The Bowl That Wouldn’t Sit Still
A clay bowl scooted across the table like it had its own feet.
Kaito lunged and caught it with both hands.
“Your soup is trying to run away,” he said.
Isamu steadied the kettle. His jaw tightened.
“That was not a funny shake.”
Kaito smirked anyway. “The hill is just stretching.”
Another tremor thumped up through the floorboards. Dried herbs jumped in their bundles. Kaito’s grin slipped.
Outside, dusk made the village paths look blue-gray. Smoke from chimneys wobbled in the air.
Isamu grabbed Kaito’s shoulder. “Stay close tonight.”
“I am close,” Kaito said, and shrugged him off.
A gust curled around Kaito’s ankles, cool and pushy. His messy spikes fluttered.
Kaito held up a hand, like he could shoo it.
The gust listened.
Leaves snapped off the path and whipped into a neat little whirl in front of his palm.
Isamu froze, eyes wide.
“Kaito,” Isamu said softly, “get inside.”
But Kaito’s teal eyes were already on the cracked trail leading toward the hills, and his boots started that way
The Shoemaker’s Bucket
Kaito hurried up the cracked path.
Isamu grabbed his vest. “Stop.”
A tremor kicked the ground. Kaito’s boot slid. He went down hard—straight into a rain puddle that smelled like wet clay.
“Ugh. Perfect,” Kaito said, spitting mud.
Isamu hauled him up and half-dragged him to a low shed beside the path. Inside, leather scraps hung from nails. A bucket of soaking soles sloshed.
A woman with short hair looked up from a shoe last. “Isamu? You bring trouble into my shop, I charge extra.”
“Later, Miki,” Isamu said. He shoved the door bar into place.
Kaito wiped his face with his sleeve. “You know her?”
“Everyone knows the shoemaker,” Miki said. “What is this?”
A knock came—slow, polite.
A low voice drifted through the wood. “Open. I need the wind kid.”
Kaito’s stomach dropped.
Isamu’s hand found a hidden knife at his belt.
The air pushed in under the door like a nosey cat. The bucket tipped.
Kaito lifted his palm without thinking, and the spill curled back into the pail
