The Frozen Challenge
Danny's green sneakers crunched against the icy steps as he climbed toward the Ice Queen's Palace. His breath came out in white puffs, and he tugged his green plaid shirt tighter around him.
"This is it," he whispered, staring up at the sparkling ice towers that twisted into the cloudy sky.
A poster fluttered against a frozen lamppost nearby. Bold letters announced: "SNOWBALL THROWING CONTEST - WINNER GETS THREE WISHES!"
Danny's bright green eyes lit up. Three wishes? He could wish for the coolest bike ever, unlimited pizza, and maybe even his own treehouse.
He marched up to the palace doors and knocked loudly on the frosted glass.
The Unexpected Helper
The massive doors creaked open. Danny stepped back as a woman with short gray hair peeked out. She wore a thick blue coat and had kind brown eyes.
"You're here for the contest?" she asked, glancing around nervously.
"Yes! I saw the poster about three wishes," Danny said, bouncing on his toes.
The woman frowned. "Oh dear. There's been a terrible mix-up. The Ice Queen's magic went haywire this morning. Now anyone who throws a snowball at the palace gets frozen solid for a whole day!"
Danny's eyes widened. "Frozen solid?"
"Like statues," she nodded sadly. "The Queen is beside herself. She really wanted people to come play, but now she's too embarrassed to cancel the contest. She's hiding in her tower, crying ice cubes."
