Silver Eyes and City Lights

Penny pressed her nose against the cool apartment window, watching the city below come alive with evening lights. Her violet eyes traced the familiar skyline of Manhattan, but tonight something felt different.

"Penny, dinner!" her mom called from the kitchen.

"Just a minute!" Penny replied, not moving from her perch on the windowsill. She pulled her star-patterned notebook closer, sketching the way shadows fell between the buildings.

Her phone buzzed with a text from her best friend Maya: "Movie night tomorrow? New sci-fi film!"

Penny smiled and typed back: "Definitely! Pick me up at seven?"

As she hit send, a flash of light caught her attention. Far across the city, the Empire State Building's top floors flickered with an unusual pattern. Not the regular tourist display she knew by heart.

Penny blinked hard and looked again. The lights pulsed in a steady rhythm—three short flashes, followed by two long ones, then silence. Then the pattern repeated.

"That's weird," she whispered, grabbing her phone to record it.

The Unexpected Visit

Penny's phone slipped from her hands as the recording stopped. The strange light pattern had vanished completely, leaving the Empire State Building's usual golden glow.

"Penny! Dinner's getting cold!" her mom called again.

"Coming!" Penny grabbed her phone and hurried to the kitchen, her mind still buzzing with questions about those flashing lights.

At the dinner table, her mom chatted about work while Penny picked at her spaghetti. She kept glancing toward the window, hoping to catch another glimpse of the mysterious pattern.

The doorbell rang.

"Who could that be at this hour?" her mom wondered, wiping her hands on a dish towel.

Penny followed her to the front door. Through the peephole stood a woman with short, practical hair and a serious expression. She wore a crisp navy jacket with small constellation pins along the lapel.

"Ms. Chen? I'm Dr. Sarah Vega from the New York Observatory," the woman said when Penny's mom opened the door. "I'm investigating reports of unusual light patterns visible from this neighborhood tonight. Have you noticed anything strange?"

Penny's heart jumped. Someone else had seen the lights too.
