The Million-Dollar Belly
Listen to audiobook
Golden Dreams and Midnight Feasts
Riley sat back in her silk-covered chair and stared at the numbers glowing on her phone screen. One trillion dollars. She had actually done it.
"I can't believe it worked," she whispered to herself in the sprawling villa. The marble floors gleamed under the crystal chandelier, and through the floor-to-ceiling windows, Maple City sparkled below like scattered diamonds.
Her stomach growled loudly. All those months of working eighteen-hour days, surviving on coffee and crackers, had left her absolutely starving. She walked to her enormous kitchen and opened the refrigerator.
"Time to celebrate properly," Riley said, pulling out containers of leftover pizza, chocolate cake, ice cream, and Chinese takeout.
She had heard people in Maple City gained weight faster than anywhere else, but after being so thin for so long, she figured she could afford to indulge just this once.
Riley ate slice after slice, spoonful after spoonful, until her eyelids grew heavy. She stumbled to her bedroom, still chewing the last bite of chocolate cake.
The Morning Surprise
Riley's eyes fluttered open as sunlight streamed through her bedroom windows. She stretched and yawned, then froze.
Something felt very wrong.
Her silk pajama shirt had completely ripped open during the night, buttons scattered across the marble floor. Her stomach had expanded into an enormous round belly that looked exactly like she was pregnant with quadruplets.
"What happened to me?" Riley gasped, running her hands over the massive bump. She remembered eating a lot, but this was impossible.
Panic filled her chest. She grabbed her phone with shaking fingers and called the first doctor's office she could find.
"Hello, Maple City Medical? I need an emergency appointment. I think I'm pregnant."
"How far along do you think you are?" the receptionist asked.
Riley stared down at her huge belly. "Very far along. Like, really far. Can someone come to my villa right away?"
Within an hour, Dr. Sarah Chen arrived at Riley's front door. The smart woman with short black hair carried a medical bag and wore a crisp white coat.
"Let's take a look," Dr. Chen said, examining Riley's enormous stomach with professional concern.
