Morning Routines

Ms. Paintbrush Bear stretched her arms above her head as sunlight streamed through the cave entrance. Her blue-and-black supersuit felt snug after a good night's sleep, and her rainbow cape draped perfectly over her shoulders.

"Another beautiful day in Canvas Wood Metropolis," she said, walking to her cave's edge. The city sparkled below with its colorful buildings, bustling streets, and cheerful residents going about their morning routines.

She summoned her giant magic paintbrush and gave it a practice swing. The brush glowed softly in her paws, ready for whatever the day might bring. Through her cave window, she watched a young deer couple walking hand-in-hand down Palette Street, their laughter echoing off the painted buildings.

A goat merchant was setting up his fruit stand, arranging bright red apples and golden oranges in neat rows. Everything looked perfectly normal and wonderfully vibrant.

Ms. Paintbrush Bear smiled and headed toward her morning patrol of the city.

The Gray Shadow

Ms. Paintbrush Bear stepped onto Palette Street, ready to start her patrol. The morning air felt crisp against her fur.

"Good morning, Mr. Goat!" she called to the fruit merchant.

The goat looked up from arranging his apples, but something was wrong. His face showed panic. "Ms. Bear! Look at my oranges!"

She hurried over to his stand. The golden oranges from minutes before had turned completely gray. Not just faded—every bit of color had vanished.

"When did this happen?" she asked, picking up one of the colorless fruits.

"Just now! I was stacking them, and the color started draining away like water!" The goat's voice shook. "What's happening to my fruit?"

Before Ms. Paintbrush Bear could answer, a young woman with short black hair jogged past. She wore a bright yellow jacket and carried a smartphone.

"Excuse me!" the woman called out, stopping suddenly. "Are you seeing this too? My weather app shows something strange moving through the city."

She held up her phone screen. A swirling gray mass appeared on the radar, moving slowly toward the city center.

"It's heading straight for downtown," the woman said, her green eyes wide with concern.
