The Missing Paint Mystery
Listen to audiobook
Morning Patrol
Super Paintbrush Ewe stretched her fluffy white arms as dawn broke over Deep City. Her red cape fluttered in the morning breeze atop the tallest tower of Paintbrush Fortress. The city spread below her like a colorful patchwork quilt—red rooftops, green parks, yellow streetlights, and purple flower boxes dotting every corner.
"Perfect morning for patrol," she said, adjusting her blue mask.
Her giant magic paintbrush sparkled with bright blue energy as she summoned it. The brush hummed with power, ready for whatever the day might bring.
Down in the courtyard, her assistant Penny Paintpot, a young humanoid deer with brown fur and antlers, waved up at her. "Ewe! The mayor called about some strange reports from the east side!"
"Strange how?" Ewe called back, floating down gracefully.
"People saying their paint supplies are acting weird. Colors looking different than usual."
Ewe landed softly on the cobblestones. Something felt off about the city this morning, though she couldn't quite place what.
The Fading Colors
Super Paintbrush Ewe and Penny Paintpot hurried through the cobblestone streets toward the east side of Deep City. As they walked, Ewe noticed something that made her stop mid-step.
"Penny, look at the fountain," she said, pointing with her giant paintbrush.
The deer followed her gaze to the central fountain where water usually sparkled bright blue. Now it ran completely clear, like ordinary tap water.
"That's... odd," Penny said, her amber eyes wide with concern.
They continued walking, but with each block, the mystery deepened. Blue mailboxes had turned gray. Blue flowers in window boxes looked washed out and pale. Even the blue stripes on the crosswalk signs had faded to nothing.
"It's not just paint supplies acting weird," Ewe realized. "All the blue is disappearing from Deep City."
At the corner of Maple Street, they met Rosa Patchwork, a smart woman with short black hair who ran the local art supply shop. Her green apron was splattered with various paint colors—except blue.
"Thank goodness you're here!" Rosa called out, waving her hands frantically. "Every drop of blue paint in my shop vanished overnight. Not stolen—vanished! Like it never existed!"
