Silver Shadows

Vangarud stood at the entrance to Rainbow Reef's mech tournament arena. His silver armor gleamed under the bioluminescent coral lights. Other contestants whispered and pointed at his shoulder-mounted laser missile.

"Look at that scary robot," said a young mermaid, swimming quickly away.

"He looks dangerous," agreed an octopus, hiding behind a purple sea fan.

Vangarud's blue eyes dimmed slightly. He had entered the tournament hoping to make friends and show everyone that robots could be heroes too. But everywhere he went, sea creatures fled in fear.

The arena announcer's voice boomed through the water. "Contestants, prepare for the first round!"

Vangarud checked his electric-shot equipped legs one last time. Maybe winning would help them understand.

The Glassy Eyes

The first round began with a splash. Vangarud faced off against Coral, a pink dolphin who spun through the water like a dancer.

"Watch out for his laser!" someone shouted from the stands.

But as they battled, something strange happened. Coral's movements became jerky and wrong. Her eyes turned glassy white.

"Help me," Coral whispered weakly. "Something's controlling my mind."

Vangarud's blue eyes widened. This wasn't part of the tournament. Someone was using dark magic to cheat.

Other contestants began acting the same way. A seahorse moved like a puppet. An eel swam in perfect circles.

"The tournament is rigged," Vangarud said to himself. Now he had to choose between winning and helping.
