The Peacock's Secret Stage
Listen to audiobook
The Golden Curtain
Nico shifted in his velvet seat as the Golden Peacock Theater's lights dimmed. The massive turquoise curtains shimmered under the spotlights, and golden feathers decorated the theater walls caught every glint of light.
"This place is incredible," he whispered to his mom, tugging at his midnight-blue hoodie. The bone charm on his wrist gave off its usual faint glow, hidden beneath his sleeve.
The show began with dancers spinning across the stage in flowing costumes. Nico watched, mesmerized by their graceful movements. During intermission, he excused himself to find the restroom.
The theater's backstage hallways were darker than he expected. Ornate peacock sculptures lined the walls, their jeweled eyes seeming to follow him. As he turned a corner, his bone charm suddenly pulsed with bright light.
"There he is," a voice hissed from the shadows.
Before Nico could react, strong hands grabbed his shoulders. A cloth covered his mouth, muffling his startled cry as figures in dark masks dragged him deeper into the theater's hidden corridors.
The Director's Audition
Nico's sneakers squeaked against the polished floor as the masked figures dragged him through twisting corridors. His bone charm pulsed frantically beneath his hoodie sleeve, casting strange shadows on the peacock-decorated walls.
"Let me go!" he shouted, but his voice echoed uselessly in the empty hallways.
They shoved him into a small room filled with costume racks and old theater props. A woman with short gray hair sat behind a cluttered desk, her sharp eyes studying him like he was a puzzle to solve.
"So you're the boy with the gift," she said, tapping her fingers on a stack of sheet music. "Your charm glows quite brightly when you're scared."
Nico tried to hide his wrist, but it was too late. The charm's light grew stronger, and suddenly the old skeleton prop in the corner twitched. Its jaw clicked open and shut.
The woman smiled. "Excellent. We have a show tonight, and we need someone with your particular talents."
"What show?" Nico asked, his voice shaking.
"The kind where the audience never forgets what they see," she replied, gesturing to the moving skeleton.
