The Pencil Tower Mystery
Listen to audiobook
Echoes in the Morning
Drawing Man stood on the observation deck of Drawing Fortress, watching the morning sun paint Creative City in golden hues. The humanoid sheep below hurried to work while deer-people tended their street gardens. Everything seemed perfectly normal.
"Another peaceful day," he said, adjusting his light blue cape in the gentle breeze.
But then he heard it. A soft tapping sound, like tiny hammers at work. It came from somewhere below, inside the fortress itself.
Drawing Man tilted his head, listening carefully. The sound repeated - tap, tap, tap - rhythmic and deliberate. It wasn't random noise. Someone, or something, was making it on purpose.
He walked to the edge of the deck and peered down at the four towers surrounding the main building. The Crayon Tower gleamed red in the sunlight. The Marker Tower stood tall and silver. The Pen Tower sparkled black.
But the Pencil Tower... something felt different about it today.
The tapping grew louder.
The Tiny Workers
Drawing Man descended the spiral stairs inside the Pencil Tower, following the mysterious tapping sounds. The walls were lined with shelves holding every type of pencil imaginable - thick drawing pencils, delicate sketching ones, colorful colored pencils.
The tapping grew louder with each step.
"Hello?" Drawing Man called softly. "Is someone there?"
The tapping stopped instantly.
Drawing Man paused on the stairs, listening. Silence filled the tower. He took another step down, and suddenly a tiny voice squeaked from somewhere near his feet.
"Giant alert! Giant alert!"
Drawing Man looked down and gasped. A cricket no bigger than his thumb stood on the step below him, wearing what looked like a miniature hard hat and holding a tiny hammer.
"You can talk?" Drawing Man whispered.
The cricket dropped his hammer with a clatter. "Oh no! We've been discovered! Sound the alarm!"
More tiny voices erupted from the pencil shelves. Drawing Man watched in amazement as dozens of small creatures - crickets, beetles, and ants - scattered in all directions, carrying tiny tools and what appeared to be blueprints made from pencil shavings.
"Wait!" Drawing Man called. "I won't hurt you!"
But the creatures had vanished into the pencil storage areas, leaving only their abandoned tools behind.
