The Puddle With a Secret Name
Listen to audiobook
The Window That Shouldn’t Drip
Blue Crayon Lion hovered over Blue Crayon Tower’s roof pad, his blue-and-black suit crisp in the wind. He drew a perfect blue circle in the air with his giant glowing crayon.
A wet sound went plip.
Water slid from a window seam and gathered into a thin puddle on the concrete, like someone had poured a cup and changed his mind.
“Uh… roof puddle?” he said.
The puddle stretched, then pinched itself into lines. For half a second, it spelled MARA.
It smeared the letters fast and scooted toward the edge.
Blue Crayon Lion flicked his wrist. A ribbon of water lifted, trying to corral it. The puddle dodged, and the ribbon slapped a small delivery drone instead.
“Hey!” A human woman in a neon orange jacket hurried over, phone in hand. “Careful! That one’s leased.”
“You saw it write?” he asked.
She swallowed. “Street puddles did it yesterday. Names. Mine. Then my boss’s. Then—”
The puddle spilled over the roof edge, and Blue Crayon Lion leaned forward
The Dryer That Blinked
Blue Crayon Lion dropped off the roof edge and caught the falling puddle in his eyes like it was a speeding marble.
Mara yelled from above, “Do not crash into my drone again!”
He angled down past a glass skywalk and landed on the sidewalk. The puddle slapped into a doorway sign that read SPIN CITY LAUNDRY and slipped inside.
The laundromat smelled like soap and warm metal. Washers rumbled like sleepy robots. The puddle zipped under a row of chairs, stretched, and wrote MARA on the tile again.
Mara ran in, clutching her phone. “Okay! It really likes me. That’s normal. Totally normal.” Her phone buzzed. She glanced down. “My boss is texting. He thinks I stole a package. I didn’t!”
A washer hiccuped and began to overfill. Water poured toward a power strip on the floor.
Blue Crayon Lion lifted one paw. “Easy… easy…” He tugged the water back, but his pull knocked a rolling cart. Socks exploded everywhere.
“Hero!” Mara snapped, then crouched to grab her phone. “Yesterday your splash hit my drone. Since then it keeps auto-sending wrong names to customers.”
From the drain, three new puddles seeped out and started scribbling names in quick wet lines.
Then all the puddles slid together, thicker now, and pushed the back door open just a crack
