Midnight Signals

The heavy door of Mariza's detention room clicked shut behind the teacher. She pressed her ear against the cold metal, listening to footsteps fade down the hallway. Paper School grew quiet except for the distant hum of old lights.

"Another night locked up," she whispered, running her fingers along the purple streaks in her brown hair. Her green eye caught the moonlight streaming through the barred window, while her black-and-purple eye seemed to absorb the shadows.

Hours passed. When the clock tower chimed midnight, Mariza heard a soft tapping on the wall. Three short taps, then two long ones. Alice's signal.

She grinned and tapped back the same pattern. Time for their secret meeting.

The window lock had been loose for weeks. Mariza pushed it open and climbed onto the ledge. Alice was already waiting in the field below, her blonde hair glowing silver in the moonlight.

"Ready for another adventure?" Alice called up softly.

Mariza dropped down, landing quietly in the grass. The night felt full of possibilities.

The Carved Promise

Alice grabbed Mariza's hand and pulled her toward the old music pavilion at the far edge of the field. The wooden structure stood empty, its paint peeling under the starlight.

"I found something amazing today," Alice whispered, climbing the three steps to the small stage. She reached behind a loose board and pulled out two wooden axes, their handles carved with intricate designs.

Mariza's breath caught. Each axe bore a different symbol. Alice's showed a delicate crown carved into the wood, while the other displayed a purple eye that seemed to watch even in the darkness.

"Where did you get these?" Mariza asked, running her finger along the eye symbol.

"Hidden in the old maintenance shed," Alice said. "Look, there's more." She pointed to tiny words carved beneath each symbol: 'A Promise Kept.'

Alice held up her axe with the crown symbol. "Let's make a pact. If something terrible happens to one of us, the other will make sure justice is done."

Mariza lifted the axe with the purple eye. The weight felt right in her hands, like it belonged there. "I promise," she said softly.

They pressed the axes together, wood touching wood under the moon.
