The Unexpected Discovery
August slammed his locker shut and adjusted his sky-blue hoodie. The hallway buzzed with Monday morning energy as students rushed past, but something felt different today.
"Hey, August!" His friend Maya jogged up, her backpack bouncing. "Did you finish the math homework?"
"Yeah, but—" August started, then stopped. A folded piece of paper had slipped from his locker and landed on the floor.
Maya bent down and picked it up. "What's this?"
August unfolded the note. Strange symbols covered the paper, arranged in neat rows. At the bottom, someone had written: "Find the next one before lunch. -A friend."
"Weird," Maya said, peering over his shoulder. "Looks like some kind of code."
August's green eyes sparkled with curiosity. He loved puzzles, and this looked like a good one. "I wonder who put it in my locker."
"Maybe it's just someone playing pranks," Maya suggested.
August tucked the note into his notebook carefully.
The Wrong August
August studied the coded note during first period, sketching symbols in his notebook. The strange marks looked familiar somehow, but he couldn't place them.
"Psst, August!" Maya whispered from the next desk. "Any luck with that mystery note?"
Before he could answer, someone tapped his shoulder. A girl he'd never seen before stood there—tall, with curly red hair and freckles covering her cheeks.
"You're August Chen, right?" she asked urgently.
"Um, no. I'm August Miller," he said, confused.
Her face went pale. "Oh no. This is bad." She glanced around nervously. "I need to talk to you after class. It's important."
The bell rang, and August packed his things slowly. Something felt wrong. As he walked toward the door, two men in dark suits appeared in the hallway.
"There he is," one said, pointing at August.
Before August could react, they grabbed his arms firmly. "August Chen, you're coming with us."
"Wait! I'm not—" August started, but they were already pulling him toward the exit.
Maya shouted his name, but the men moved too quickly. August's heart pounded as they dragged him through the school doors.
