The Shadow That Brought Light
Listen to audiobook
Morning Sunshine
Sarah stepped out of her cozy house on Maple Street, breathing in the sweet morning air of Beautiful Town. The crystal pond across the street sparkled like diamonds in the early sunlight.
"Good morning, Mrs. Chen!" Sarah called to her elderly neighbor who was watering her prize-winning roses.
Mrs. Chen's wrinkled face brightened. "Oh, Sarah dear! You're up early today."
Sarah skipped over, her pastel blue dress swaying with each step. "I wanted to help you with the community garden before school."
"What a thoughtful girl," Mrs. Chen said, handing Sarah a small watering can. "The marigolds need extra attention today."
As Sarah carefully tended to the bright orange flowers, she noticed other neighbors beginning their morning routines. Mr. Thompson jogged past with his golden retriever, Max. The baker, Ms. Rodriguez, opened her shop windows, filling the air with the smell of fresh bread.
Sarah smiled, watching her town come alive. Everything felt perfect in Beautiful Town, just like always.
When Shadows Fall
Sarah finished watering the marigolds and handed the can back to Mrs. Chen. "Thank you for letting me help!"
"You're such a dear," Mrs. Chen said, patting Sarah's shoulder.
Sarah waved goodbye and skipped toward the town square. She loved watching the morning come alive in Beautiful Town. The crystal pond reflected puffy white clouds as she passed.
Suddenly, the sky darkened. Sarah looked up, confused. There were no storm clouds anywhere.
A strange shadow swept across the square like a giant bird, but when Sarah squinted at the sky, she saw nothing there. The shadow passed over the flower beds, and the bright marigolds she had just watered began to droop and wilt.
"What's happening?" Sarah whispered.
Mrs. Rodriguez stepped out of her bakery, flour dusting her apron. "Did you see that shadow, Sarah? My fresh bread just went stale!"
Mr. Thompson jogged up with Max, both looking worried. "The fountain stopped flowing," he panted. "Right when that shadow passed over it."
Sarah felt a chill run down her spine. Something was very wrong in Beautiful Town.
