The Sound Under the Shelf
Ms Paintbrush Bear balanced her phone on a paint can and watched a clip titled “CITY SPRINT WEEK—SIGN UP NOW.”
“Hmm,” she said, brushing the cave wall with slow, careful strokes. Her giant paintbrush leaned nearby like a mop that had good manners.
From the storage room came a thump-thump-thump, so quick it sounded like a drumroll.
Ms Paintbrush Bear set the phone down.
“Hello?” she called.
A small kangaroo kid slid out from behind stacked canvases. His sandy-tan ears drooped. A scuffed green hoodie hung off one shoulder, and his red sneakers looked ready to sprint on their own.
“I’m Kip,” he mumbled.
“Why are you hiding in my cave?”

“Sprint Street,” she said. She grabbed her giant paintbrush, and the shimmering bristles left a thin paint-light trail.
Kip, the sandy-tan kangaroo kid in a scuffed green hoodie, swallowed hard.
“I can’t go,” he said.
“You can stand behind me,” she said. “No running required.”
She lifted off, flying low over Canvas Forest City so she would not rattle rooftops. Kip clung to her belt, his red sneakers tapping her hip like nervous knocks.
They dropped onto Sprint Street beside a music festival stage. Speakers boomed. Confetti stuck to puddles, and the road looked like a shiny mirror.
An orange fox in a yellow rain jacket sprinted past, a clear medal case tucked under his arm.
Ms Paintbrush Bear lunged—then stopped as Kip slid on a puddle.
“No!” Kip squeaked. “Last time I ran, I wrecked it!”
His sneaker skidded, leaving a bright red smear across the wet street.
A tiny green-and-gold hummingbird drone dipped close, its lens staring.
The fox darted into a laundromat, and the door swung shut
