Morning Signals

Ms. Paintbrush Axolotl stood at the top window of her tower, watching Canvas Metropolis sparkle in the morning sunlight. The city stretched out below like a giant canvas waiting to be painted. Colorful buildings housed artists, families, and shop owners who always waved when they spotted her rainbow cape.

"Another beautiful day to help people," she said, adjusting her blue mask.

Her giant magic paintbrush hummed softly beside her, its blue glow pulsing like a heartbeat. She'd had the brush for three years now, ever since the day she'd discovered her powers. It never failed her.

A soft chime echoed through the tower. Ms. Paintbrush picked up her phone and saw a text from Mayor Chen: "Emergency meeting at City Hall in one hour. Strange reports coming in from downtown."

She frowned. Strange reports usually meant trouble for Canvas Metropolis. But with her paintbrush and powers, she could handle anything.

"Time to fly," she said, stepping onto her balcony.

The Flickering Light

Ms. Paintbrush Axolotl soared through the morning air, her rainbow cape streaming behind her. The wind felt good against her smooth pink skin as she flew toward City Hall.

But something was wrong.

Her magic paintbrush, usually humming with power, felt cold in her hand. The blue glow flickered like a dying lightbulb.

"What's happening?" she whispered, landing on the City Hall steps.

Inside, Mayor Chen paced behind her desk. She was a kind elderly woman with silver hair pulled back in a neat bun and worried brown eyes behind wire-rimmed glasses. Her purple blazer looked wrinkled, as if she'd been up all night.

"Ms. Paintbrush, thank goodness you're here," Mayor Chen said. "Strange things are happening all over the city. Traffic lights are changing colors randomly. The fountain in Central Park is shooting paint instead of water. And worst of all—"

A loud crash echoed from outside. Through the window, they saw a delivery truck spinning in circles, its driver looking confused and scared.

"The city's going crazy," Mayor Chen finished. "And nobody knows why."

Ms. Paintbrush tried to summon her paintbrush powers, but nothing happened. Her brush remained dim and lifeless.
