The Morning Patrol

Sketch Doe adjusted her silver mask and stepped out of her apartment balcony into the crisp morning air of Doodle Metropolis. The city stretched below her, a sprawling maze of colorful buildings where humans and humanoid deer moved through their daily routines.

Her giant magical pencil hummed with energy as she gripped it, ready for patrol. The pencil's tip glowed softly blue, matching her dark supersuit perfectly.

"Another peaceful morning," she said aloud, her voice carrying clearly in the quiet air.

But as she prepared to take flight, a strange shimmer caught her eye near Sketch Thicket below. The massive formation of interconnected pens and pencils that formed the heart of the city looked... different today. Some of the writing instruments seemed to be vibrating oddly.

Sketch Doe frowned behind her mask. She'd never seen anything like it before.

Just then, her communicator crackled to life. "Emergency call coming in from the forest district," the dispatcher announced. "Missing persons report."

The shimmer grew stronger.

The Missing Voice

Sketch Doe swooped down toward the forest district, her giant magical pencil cutting through the morning air. The emergency call had mentioned missing persons, but she hadn't expected to find a young deer mother pacing frantically near a cluster of oak trees.

"Please help me!" the mother called out, her brown fur matted with worry. "My little fawn, Melody, wandered off during our morning walk. She's only six months old and gets scared easily."

Sketch Doe landed gracefully and opened her mouth to respond reassuringly. Nothing came out. She tried again, pressing her throat with her silver-gloved hand. Silence.

The strange shimmer from Sketch Thicket pulsed stronger, and suddenly Sketch Doe understood. Whatever was happening to those pens and pencils had somehow stolen her voice.

"Are you okay?" the mother asked, noticing Sketch Doe's confused expression.

Sketch Doe nodded quickly and pointed deeper into the forest. She'd have to find the lost fawn without being able to call out or ask questions. The mother's eyes filled with fresh tears as another wave of that mysterious energy rippled through the air.

"Melody is afraid of loud noises," the mother whispered. "She hides when she's frightened."
