The Slippery Parade Rehearsal
Listen to audiobook
Silver Leaves, Sharp Turns
Eucalyptus leaves flashed silver as the breeze stirred. Emma Frost glided along the paved path, her sparkling ice-blue gown catching sun between tall trunks. A thin frosty trail faded behind her shoes.
“Again,” Emma said, and she set her phone on a tree stump, music ticking from a tinny speaker.
A boy in a neon vest jogged up, puffing.
“Hi! I’m Milo,” he said. “Parade rehearsal crew. You’re the spinner.”
“I prefer ‘skater,’” Emma said, smiling anyway. She pointed at her screen. “Where do the drummers turn?”
Milo leaned in. “Right here. Also, fun surprise.” He tugged a cart into view: a boxy machine with a clear tank and a hose.
“It makes bubbles,” he said, proud.
Emma squinted at the nozzle. “Bubbles on pavement?”
Milo flicked a switch to test it, and a wet burp of foam spit onto the path
The Hose That Wouldn’t Listen
Foam kept coming. The machine made a hungry gurgle and spat a white river across the path.
“Off, off, OFF!” Milo slapped the switch. Nothing.
Emma slid one foot back, careful. Her gown glittered, but the pavement looked like it had been buttered.
“We need grit,” she said. “Sand. Dirt. Anything not slippery.”
Milo yanked the cart handle. “Restrooms! The caretaker has supplies!”
They hurried off the path to a small restroom building with a metal awning. A man in rubber boots wiped a window with a squeegee, humming.
“Sir!” Milo puffed. “Emergency soap situation!”
The man blinked. “I’m Gus. I clean windows, not… whatever that is.” He patted his pockets, then frowned at his key ring. “Supply closet key is missing.”
Emma pulled out her phone, hands steady. Milo thrust his phone close.
“The drummers texted,” Milo said. “Two minutes. They’re coming down the bend.”
Outside, the machine burped again.
