Morning Plans

Chihiro stared at her school uniform hanging on the bedroom door. Her parents bustled around downstairs, preparing breakfast and discussing their work schedules.

"Chihiro, hurry up or you'll be late!" her mother called from the kitchen.

Instead of reaching for her uniform, Chihiro grabbed her favorite pink and green outfit from the dresser. She pulled on her sneakers and quietly crept to her bedroom window. The big Toys R Us store stood just three blocks away, its colorful sign visible through the morning haze.

Her father's voice drifted upstairs. "We'll both be working late tonight. Chihiro should be fine walking home from school alone."

Chihiro smiled and slipped her phone into her pocket. Today would be different.

The Unlocked Door

Chihiro slipped out the back door while her parents finished their coffee. The morning air felt cool against her face as she walked toward the giant toy store.

At Toys R Us, she noticed a small woman with short gray hair unlocking the employee entrance. The woman wore a blue vest with a name tag that read "Manager - Ms. Chen."

"We're not open yet, sweetie," Ms. Chen called out kindly.

"I'm just looking around outside," Chihiro replied, stepping closer to the colorful window displays.

Ms. Chen smiled and disappeared inside. Chihiro waited exactly three minutes, then tried the door handle.

It clicked open.

Her heart pounded as she stepped into the quiet store. Rows of toys stretched endlessly before her like a magical kingdom. She pulled out her phone to check the time: 8:47 AM.
