The Sleeping Street
Alice stretched her arms and yawned as twilight settled over Dreamcatcher Drive. The street glowed softly with porch lights, and the evening air smelled like jasmine and warm cookies. She had been walking for what felt like hours, exploring every corner of this magical neighborhood.
"Just a quick rest," she whispered to herself, settling onto a bench beneath an old oak tree. The gentle breeze rustled the leaves above her, and somewhere nearby, a dog barked playfully.
Alice's eyelids grew heavy. The peaceful sounds of the street—children laughing in distant backyards, screen doors creaking open, the soft hum of evening conversations—wrapped around her like a lullaby.
She meant to close her eyes for just a moment.
When Alice opened them again, everything had changed. Gone were the familiar porch lights and cozy houses. Instead, she found herself lying on sawdust inside a massive circus tent. Red and gold fabric stretched high above her, and the air smelled of popcorn and hay.
A tall man in a black top hat loomed over her, grinning widely.
The Sparrow's Warning
"Welcome to my circus, little one!" the tall man boomed, his gold teeth glinting. "I am Ringmaster Blackwood, and you are now part of my permanent collection."
Alice scrambled to her feet, brushing sawdust from her dress. "Collection? I'm not a thing to be collected!"
"Oh, but you are." He gestured grandly at the tent around them. "Everyone here came from dreams, just like you. And once you're here, you can never leave."
A tiny brown sparrow landed on Alice's shoulder, chirping urgently in her ear. Alice blinked in surprise—she could understand every word.
"Don't trust him," the sparrow whispered. "He's lying about something important. Ask him about the music box."
"What music box?" Alice demanded, turning to face Ringmaster Blackwood.
His confident grin faltered for just a moment. "How did you—" He cleared his throat. "No questions from performers. Time for your first act!"
He snapped his fingers, and suddenly Alice found herself wearing a glittery pink costume with feathers. The sparrow flew to a nearby trapeze rope.
"I won't perform for you!" Alice declared.
