The Vanishing Art Contest
Listen to audiobook
Morning in the Pencil Grove
Sketch Doe stretched her tan arms above her head as sunlight filtered through the towering pencils of Sketch Thicket. The wooden trunks around her gleamed yellow and pink, their sharpened tips reaching toward the clouds like natural skyscrapers.
"Good morning, beautiful city," she whispered, adjusting her silver mask.
Her giant magical pencil hummed softly at her side, glowing with faint blue energy. She loved starting her day here in the heart of Doodle Metropolis, where the scent of cedar wood mixed with morning air.
A rabbit in a paint-splattered apron hopped past, carrying an easel twice his size.
"Big day for the art contest prep!" he called cheerfully.
Sketch nodded and waved. The Annual Creativity Competition was only three days away. Artists throughout the city had been working for months on their masterpieces.
She stepped onto a main boulevard lined with pen trees, their metallic bark catching the light. Something felt different today, though she couldn't place what.
Empty Easels
Sketch Doe rounded the corner near Maple Street and stopped short. The tall fox wearing a white coat and thick glasses stood beside a wooden easel, staring at a blank canvas with wide amber eyes.
"My painting!" the fox exclaimed, his voice cracking. "It was right here this morning. A whole landscape with rolling hills and sunset clouds."
Other artists gathered around, all looking confused and upset. A koala mother with gray fur clutched her joey close while pointing at another empty easel.
"Mine's gone too," she said. "Three weeks of work on my portrait series."
Sketch's ears perked up as she scanned the group. Five blank canvases, three empty sculpture stands, and two cleared workbenches. Every piece of art had vanished without a trace.
"When did you all notice?" Sketch asked, stepping forward.
"About an hour ago," the fox replied. "I came to add finishing touches before tomorrow's judging."
The koala nodded frantically. "Same here. Everything was perfect yesterday evening."
Sketch felt her magical pencil pulse with energy. Something was definitely wrong in Doodle Metropolis, and the art contest was in serious trouble.
