The Bridge Beckons

Julian pushed through the stone entrance of Thistledown Park, his red sneakers crunching on the gravel path. The city noise faded behind him like a closing door.

"Perfect," he whispered, pulling out his phone to check the time. Three hours until dinner. Three hours to explore every corner of this place.

The wooden bridge caught his attention first. It arched gracefully over the clear stream, its weathered planks looking sturdy enough for adventures. Julian jogged toward it, his blue hoodie flapping in the gentle breeze.

As he reached the bridge's center, footsteps echoed from the path behind him. Two men in dark jackets approached, their eyes scanning the area like they were searching for something.

"You lost, kid?" the taller one called out.

Julian turned, his confident smile wavering slightly. Something about their tone made his stomach tighten.

"Just exploring," he replied, gripping the bridge railing.

The men stepped closer, blocking his path back to the main trail.

Unexpected Watchers

The shorter man pulled out rope from his jacket pocket. Julian's heart hammered against his ribs.

"What do you want?" Julian asked, stepping backward on the bridge planks.

"Just need you to come with us, kid," the tall man said. His voice sounded fake-friendly, like a salesman trying too hard.

Julian glanced at the stream below. The water looked deep enough to jump into, but the current moved fast. Behind the men, he spotted something unexpected - a small woman with short gray hair crouched behind a park bench, watching everything.

"I'm not going anywhere," Julian said, gripping the wooden railing tighter.

The shorter man moved forward with the rope. "Don't make this harder than it needs to be."

Julian's mind raced. The woman behind the bench caught his eye and pointed toward the far side of the bridge. She mouthed something that looked like "run."

The men stepped closer. Julian had seconds to decide.

"My mom knows where I am," he lied, hoping to buy time.

The tall man laughed. "Nice try, but we saw you sneak in here alone."
