The Glowing Atom

Millie pressed her nose against the car window as they climbed the winding hill. The Quantum Quest Science Museum gleamed ahead like a massive glowing atom, its silver curves catching the afternoon sun.

"Can you believe Archie didn't want to come?" she said to her mom. "He said museums are boring."

Her mom laughed. "Well, more fun for you then."

Millie clutched her notebook and bounced in her seat. She'd been planning this visit for weeks, especially to see the new dinosaur exhibit everyone was talking about.

Inside the museum, holographic planets spun overhead while robot guides welcomed visitors. Millie's green eyes sparkled as she took in the interactive displays. A massive T-Rex skeleton dominated the dinosaur hall, surrounded by fossil dig stations and prehistoric dioramas.

"I wish Archie could see this," she whispered, touching her temple. Sometimes she could sense his thoughts when she really concentrated, but the connection felt fuzzy today.

She opened her notebook and started sketching the dinosaur's enormous skull.

The Paleontologist's Invitation

Millie adjusted her grip on her pencil as she added shading to the T-Rex's massive jaw. The museum had grown quieter in the past hour, with most families heading home for dinner.

"Excuse me, young lady." A woman with short silver hair and a museum badge approached her. "I'm Dr. Chen, the paleontologist here. That's an excellent sketch."

Millie beamed. "Thank you! I've been practicing dinosaur drawings all summer."

"Would you like to see something special? We have a new fossil in our preparation lab that isn't on display yet."

Millie's green eyes lit up. She glanced around for her mom, who was reading an information plaque across the hall.

"It's just through this door," Dr. Chen said, pointing to a staff entrance. "A complete baby triceratops skull."

Millie hesitated for a moment, then tucked her notebook into her hoodie pocket. "Okay!"

Dr. Chen swiped her keycard and held the door open. As soon as Millie stepped through, she heard the click of the lock behind her. The hallway stretched ahead, lined with metal doors and flickering fluorescent lights.

"Wait," Millie said, turning around. "Where exactly—"

But Dr. Chen was already walking away quickly, not looking back.
