When Heroes Fall
Listen to audiobook
The Last Training Day
Mariza swung her black and turquoise sword at the training dummy, water spiraling around the blade before freezing into sharp ice crystals. The dummy's straw stuffing exploded everywhere.
"Too reckless!" Hero Captain Finn called from across the Cookie Kingdom's training courtyard. The ground beneath their feet sparkled like crushed graham crackers, and candy-striped towers rose behind them. "You can't control your power when you're angry."
Whitelily stepped beside her best friend, white braids bouncing as she moved. Her lily staff glowed softly in her hands. "She's getting better, Captain Finn. Watch this time."
Mariza gripped her sword tighter. The other heroes always said the same thing - too young, too wild, too dangerous. Only Whitelily believed in her.
"Fine," Mariza muttered, focusing on a new dummy. "I'll show them."
The water around her sword began to churn, responding to her frustration. She had to prove herself somehow.
The Message in Static
The next morning, Mariza sat on the castle's candy-cane steps, watching the sunrise paint the graham cracker courtyard golden. Her sword lay across her knees as she waited for Whitelily.
"Ready for another day of 'you're too reckless'?" Whitelily appeared, braids bouncing as she plopped down beside her best friend.
Before Mariza could answer, Captain Finn burst through the frosting doors, his face pale. "Emergency meeting! All heroes to the war room - now!"
Inside the gingerbread war room, the older heroes clustered around a crystal communication device. Static crackled from it, then a desperate voice broke through.
"...under attack...dark forces everywhere...can't hold much longer..."
The message cut to silence.
"That was from the Eastern Kingdoms," Captain Finn announced grimly. "They're requesting immediate assistance. Shadow creatures have overrun three villages already."
Hero Captain Maya stepped forward. "We leave within the hour. Full mission team only."
Mariza jumped up. "I'm ready! I can help-"
"Absolutely not," Captain Finn interrupted. "You're staying here with the trainees."
Whitelily squeezed Mariza's hand. "I have to go with them. I'm sorry."
Mariza's heart sank as she watched her best friend gather her lily staff.
