When Princess Met the Grumpy Art Critic
Listen to audiobook
Morning Sparkles
Princess Crayon Unicorn stretched her rainbow wings and stepped onto the balcony of her castle tower. The morning sun painted Art Gallery Land in soft golden light. Below, colorful buildings dotted the landscape like scattered paint drops.
She picked up her giant rainbow crayon and gave it a gentle spin. Today felt different somehow. The air buzzed with possibility.
"Princess!" called Brushy, her sheep friend, from the courtyard below. "Come see the new poster!"
Crayon Unicorn Princess fluttered down, her blue mane catching the breeze. Brushy stood beside a freshly posted announcement on the castle's message board.
"Art Gallery Land welcomes famous critic Professor Graylord Sniff," she read aloud. "He will review all our beautiful creations this week."
"Isn't that exciting?" Brushy bleated happily. "Someone important will see our art!"
Princess tilted her head, studying the serious-looking man in the poster's photograph. Something about his stern expression made her rainbow crayon feel heavier in her hand.
The Unexpected Arrival
The next morning, Princess Crayon Unicorn flew toward the town square with Brushy trotting beside her. Art Gallery Land buzzed with excited chatter from deer, goats, and humans preparing their displays for Professor Sniff's visit.
"Look at all these beautiful paintings!" Brushy bleated, pointing at colorful canvases lining the street.
Princess nodded, but her stomach felt tight. Something about that poster bothered her.
A black carriage rolled into the square, pulled by two gray horses. The door swung open, and out stepped a tall man in a dark suit. His hair was perfectly combed, his glasses perched on his nose, and his mouth turned down in a permanent frown.
"Professor Graylord Sniff," whispered a nearby goat.
The professor pulled out a small notebook and began walking from painting to painting. At each one, he shook his head and scribbled notes.
"Terrible composition," he muttered at a sunset painting. "Dreadful colors," he said at a flower portrait.
Princess watched a young deer artist's face crumple as the professor dismissed her rainbow landscape with a wave of his hand.
"This is all quite awful," Professor Sniff announced loudly. "Art Gallery Land clearly has no understanding of real art."
